About this deal

There she expects to meet with long-lost family who will welcome her with open arms and loving hearts. Eva Ibbotson's style of writing about her characters, where she often seems to leave things unsaid, somehow makes the characters seem even more real because you use your own imagination to fill out some of the details.

Finn goes to Westwood to help Clovis, but Clovis tells him that he has since told Sir Aubrey that his confession was simply a joke. Sure, the responsible-adult, realist part of me knows that 2 pre-teens couldn't possibly make a journey up (down? Maia turns to her strict yet kindly governess, Miss Minton, for company, and strikes up some unusual and rewarding friendships. Although, I appreciate the critique of Western/British colonial heritage and imbedded racism/white supremacy in Western cultures. The twins, who have received reward money for betraying Clovis’s hiding place to the investigators, refuse to share their wealth with their desperate parents or with each other and seek to hide it in the house. And be sure to check out my bio page to learn a little about me and the Picture Book/Chapter Book Calendars I sell on Etsy! The story is a little mix of A Little Princess, The Series of Unfortunate Events, Cinderella and … the book that Ibootson references/uses in this tale. You can hear the rustling foliage and the gentle lapping of the river as you read which makes for a truly vivid experience.

Her parents passed away in an accident and since then she has been a wealthy orphan girl compelled to spend her vacations alone at the Mayfair Academy for Young Ladies in London. Kevin Crossley-Holland's The Seeing Stone creates a real world whose people you will remember a lifetime, says Anne Fine, introducing our recommendations for young readers". for she has her brilliant, resourceful governess, Miss Minton, who is always by her side, the support of the local people and most importantly, Finn, the wild native boy who is running from his own form of familial entrapment. You could really relate to the main character, Maia, and it was a book that I really couldn't put down.It was a finalist for all of the major British children's literary awards ( below), winning the Smarties Prize, ages 9–11, and garnering an unusual commendation as runner-up for the Guardian Award.

When her husband was alive he bred snails in the garage; they also kept fish and had a small and very hairy dog.It is only Maia and governess, Miss Minton, who embrace their new setting and long to discover all that their tropical surroundings, and those who reside there, have to offer. I enjoyed this through and through, and somewhere in the second half it sailed from a 3-star rating to a 4-star one. Which Witch was runner-up for the Carnegie Medal and The Secret of Platform 13 was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize. Imagine arriving only to find that you're not wanted, only the large sum of money your parents have left you is.

Like many of Ibbotson's protagonists, Maia is an orphan -- and more than anything else she longs for family and a sense of belonging. Fortunately, Maia has a very sympathetic, if somewhat mysterious governess who accompanies her to Brazil and in her adventures. It reminded me of the days where Western anthropologists would sit comfortably in their homes writing about people from other cultures, obviously not very fairly and in a very "Othering" manner. In some ways, this story reminds me of what Burnett does in The Secret Garden: a young girl is taken into a hostile landscape and she brings together a group of people who have all been lonely and isolated. Undeterred by ill-fortune, and with a huge heart and a set of wonderful friends, Maia navigates her way through the different twists and turns, transforming both her own fortune and the fortunes of the others close to her. With the help of an unusual set of friends - including her governess, a local boy and a homesick child actor - she embraces her new environment and life.
