Because of his youthful appearance and apparent naivete, the man is given the name of Kid (later to become Kidd, There is little in the way of plot, especially since one of the characteristics of Bellona is its unpredictability. Kidd navigates the city with one shoe on his foot and a notebook in his hand. He meets roving bands of squatters called Scorpions, falls in and out of relationsips with men and women, and tries, but usually fails, to make sense of his strange surroundings. He keeps meeting people who wear the same chains as he does. He is not sure if any of them could be the girl with the scarred leg. Dhalgren takes place in the fictional city of Bellona, a city that once had a population of two million but because of a strange disaster (a series of fires? a race riot?), there are only about a thousand inhabitants left there. In general, Bellona is a pretty dangerous place to find yourself: people die unexpectedly; acts of violence or debauchery occur randomly and often; and a gang of thugs, called the Scorpions, run the streets by night. To stay safe, it’s best to wear an orchid, a bladed weapon that I imagine looks like the Wolverine’s fist, if you have one.

Young people who are NEET are considered to be at greater risk of poor physical and mental health, being unemployed, and having low quality and low wage work in later life [footnote 12]. Fuel poverty is the condition of being unable to afford to keep one’s home adequately heated for comfort and is associated with a reduced quality of health and excess winter deaths [footnote 23]. People living in the private rented sector were most vulnerable to fuel poverty, 21.3% of households experienced fuel poverty, compared with 7.4% of owner-occupiers. 6.
