About this deal

Big, Big Train, while massively successful in the prog-sphere, mean little to anyone outside their own niche. The album closer, “Love Is All” feels like an emerging from the pain of Letting Go, and finding your place of calm. Birdsong, echoing piano and a building cinematic atmosphere characterise instrumental prelude Into The Icehouse, an Eno-esque mood-setter that, in a kinder world, might have served well as intro music to a live show.

Plus we see how it affected the family, both literal and the band-family – our “loss” in no way compares to their… but we feel it. The opening has hints of David Crosby’s jazzy inflections and song structures as well as the harmonies.Give it a spin if you can and enjoy it for what is is a fine collection of promise and, ultimately, of hope. It’s a good thing to know that this album was 95% complete at the time of David’s passing and so what we are hearing is pretty much his complete vision for this set of songs. It opens with Into The Icehouse, an instrumental, ambient piece of birdsong and minimal piano tones playing almost a lament. You feel comforted by the familiarity of David’s voice but but refreshed by the direction he takes in some songs.

However, by the Spring of last year, he was seeking to forge a solo career in parallel with continuing to be a leading force within Big Big Train. Completed by a working party of musicians closest to the multi-instrumentalist, spear-headed by co-producer/engineer, Patrick Phillips (Kate Bush, Van Morrison, Goldfrapp, Ludovico Einaudi). Especially because – as Longdon looks back on doors opened, paths chosen, and where those choices have led – this personal, emotional and frequently sublime record simply vibrates with life, and living. The album was steered to completion under the control of David's close friends Patrick Phillips and Gary Bromham and his partner Sarah Ewing.Watch It Burn’s low piano line, new wave guitar riff and great Stacey/Vantsis groove power along as Longdon revisits a toxic relationship with an alcohol-dependent ex-lover.
