About this deal

The climax and final acts simply let you on the edge of your chair, and the plot twists not only make sense but also make you feel everything.

Furthermore, amygdalines that are neither Oligarchs nor Similars are much, much smaller; the Propagandist fremda are described as roughly one-third of Obelus' size. On the driver’s side was a younger-looking man of East Asian descent, seeming to curse whatever cosmic force had made him be awake this early. I absolutely consumed this book, I cannot recommend it highly enough - especially to anyone who may be a fan of, or looking for a gateway into, the works of Ursula K. touching on issues of prejudice and xenophobia along the way, Axiom s End is the engaging first volume of a projected series. Aliens Speaking English: Alien Ampersand speaks perfect English, as does Obelus, because they've cracked an algorithm that lets them learn all Earth languages perfectly—or rather, they know Earth languages; the way amygdalines vocalize is totally incompatible with human speech, so Ampersand uses a high-tech text-to-voice gadget.

The aliens use them as a functional Sure, Let's Go with That translation of proper nouns that have no native human vocabulary. By the time the second book starts, three months after the end of the first, Cora freely admits that she's in love with Ampersand within her own head. My point it, everything is understandable, although it is a bit of work to understand at the beginning. Disintegrator Ray: Obelus' main method of killing, in which he disassembles the molecules of his victims, leaving no trace. She neither knows nor cares whether her father's leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with him until she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades.

While hard sci-fi, the relationship and character interaction is just as enjoyable and well executed as the handling of government cover-ups, alien language, and culture. Upon meeting with Cora, Ampersand heals her wounds, makes amends, then urges her to leave him for her own safety. Cora’s feeling of horror that this was even happening quickly hopped to embarrassment before settling onto her old standby: numbness. I felt invested in Cora as a person and look forward to seeing her in future installments, along with all the other objectively cooler characters. If it's not clear by the username, I love aliens in fiction, especially aliens that have human friendships. While the plot and story felt like an elevated, and much more interesting, take on synthetic space alien civilizations coming into contact with humans, I really enjoyed the details in this book. Ellis handles these exciting questions about humanity, personhood, communication, expression, and our place in the universe, with exceptional wit and empathy.
