About this deal

The author rightfully assesses the ways in which makeup is a tool for fitting in as much as it is a tool for protest and standing out. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

Read this to come fact to face with Janice Galloway's bright, assertive intellect but read it also to encounter the darker side of Scotland's twentieth century psyche. If she never quite existed in reality as she is described in All Made Up, I'm still glad Janice Galloway shaped her and gave her such vibrant, hideous life. People of colour were not expected to wear makeup and for a long time makeup companies did not make shades suitable for them. This is a wonderful book, too, and certainly if it is the experience of adolescence, particularly adolescence in a certain time or place, that the reader most engages in, this will not disappoint. All information (whether in text or photographs) is supplied in good faith but should not be relied upon as being a statement of representation or fact. Born to a middle-aged mum, Janice has to fight for space with Cora, her bullying, much older sister.

My reading of this book is that it is a little more cerebral, a little more guarded, a little more reserved than her earlier book - the stoicism which was such a hallmark of the first, and in some ways remarkable in the child, somehow left me wanting to be let IN a little more, in this one. I would have liked to see this information put into a thesis statement but primarily Nudson gives us the information and that’s all. Grammar school is her way out of the narrow existence of her family but she must navigate the pitfalls of her teenage years largely on her own without much support or advice from her mum or sister who spend all their free time in front of the TV.We zip forward to Cora's decline and further examples of the unstinting adoration of her longtime suitor Daft Sandy, and are left with the puzzle of books that read like memoir while proclaiming themselves "anti-memoir", books stuffed with character and incident, any number of which may be fabrications or exaggerations – all made up, just as the author has warned us in this latest title. Whichever is truer, the uses of borax and bicarbonate of soda as stain removers seemed tame thereafter.

It covers endless ways makeup has been used in countries across the world, from women wearing red lipstick in defiance of Hitler during WWII or to oppose government action in Nicaraguan protests, to the use of makeup by Transformistas in Venezuela, to Japanese women using it to maintain femininity as they entered the workplace during WWI, to skin bleaching in India, to government control of appearance in North Korea…. We are only on page 11 of the new book when Cora head-butts Janice because she says the wrong thing, and their mother ‘foraged with her fingers for damage’. On the one hand, both titles are witty comments on the memoir genre, asking questions about truth and memory and acknowledging how much must necessarily remain hidden. The writing is an exuberant demonstration of how Galloway fulfilled and far exceeded the expectation placed on her by youthful promise. Growing up in Saltcoats, Ayreshire, Galloway experienced familial dysfunction and conflict, knowing no other way of life. It serves as a quick historical overview of changing roles and trends in beauty, and although Nudson doesn’t go too into depth on any subtopic, this serves as a great introduction/overview of the history of makeup and beauty culture.
