About this deal

Dear hubby thought that planting in a kids wading pool was a neat idea until we had problems with sickly plants. Some property owners are hesitant to use cedar chips in their landscape beds because they lose their color and repellent qualities relatively quickly. Cedar mulch helps to inhibit weed growth so you can spend less time weeding and more time enjoying your garden. This is a much different type of exposure compared to that of our pets who are not breathing in dust particles from milled wood.

These changes, in turn, can affect the metabolism of drugs in the liver, including anesthetics, but there is not much information on a direct link between these changes and disease or clinical symptoms. Horse manure" that has been sitting in a pile for a while (years) is NOT compost it is rotted manure that can vary wildly in nutrient composition. Other experts report skin sensitivities, itching, or allergies to pine shavings and their pets so it might be irritating to their skin despite being safe for the respiratory tract and liver. Difficult to locate a consistently fine and clean bark to use to mulch my outdoor potted plants -- really like this because it is perfect for my pothos to fill in between large arieal roots at the base, and also has helped keep the pests off my soft-leaved tropicals that they like to chew on.The aroma given off by cedar shavings is a natural repellent to insects, such as termites, ants, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and other pests like rodents that may cause harm to your living spaces and surroundings. Therefore, products such as kiln-dried pine are safe (many pet products are heat-treated like this). Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. As a precaution, you can also add nitrogen-rich fertilizer to the soil to help balance out any disparity ( SF Gate Home Guides).

They control various garden pests, such as aphids, by eating them or laying their eggs in or on them. There are some situations where cedar mulch is not the best option, and these should be considered and applied to your own circumstances before you make your decision about using cedar mulch.

I'd love to know if anyone has found a way to mitigate/counteract the aleopathic compounds in red cedar.

In some cases, stubborn weeds will still make an appearance, but these can be easily spotted against the background of cedar mulch and quickly pulled up. It gives off a scent, which is considered pleasant by most people, but some people are sensitive to smells, and it can cause them to have an allergic reaction. Consider looking for an alternative mulch, or avoiding mulching entirely, if these situations apply to you. Look around you, when the soil is bare, first come small plants (grasses, musk, even algae), then bigger ones and so forth.

Grass cuttings are often used as a mulch, which you could save up from mowing your own lawn, or ask your neighbor if you could have their grass cuttings. Mulch left on the garden all year evens out abrupt temperature swings, slowing the rate at which the ground both cools in fall and warms in spring. If you're on a long-term schedule and won't turn it often, cedar shavings would help it retain loft (and so, good ventilation) longer. Helpful at adding more nutrients and retaining moisture, it’s important to be careful where you place that mulch. Cedar mulch also repels pollinators and beneficial insects; this is the flip side of its pest control qualities: it will also affect the ecosystem negatively, and, especially if you want your plants to fruit or produce seeds, cedar mulch is not a good choice.
