The Shades by Evgenia Citkowitz is a short tale that may have been stretched into something it is not. This tough to read view into a family torn by sorrow abounds with feeling and has many good discussion points. Enter “the girl”, Keira, a young woman who claims to be the daughter of the previous owner of their country home.

There is quite some "jumping around" that takes place in the story telling, rather than a good flow at times. Written in cool and crystalline prose, The Shades unspools in a rational and realistic world in which all is not as it seems. The book is like a canvas with an overlay of fractured portraits, each providing a key to the family’s layers, none conclusive in themselves. This beautifully written slice of 21st English life examines the manners and morals of Brits and their encounter with death and dissolving family.If you look at relationships in this day and age, there does not seem to be the same relevance placed on marriage and the communion of two people. Beautiful and inspiring photographs, warm and engaging writing style, lots of useful information and some great sections (Who murdered magnolia? Her keen understanding and appreciation of the South African landscape, its fauna and flora, as well as its peoples, is colourfully evident in her writing. Catherine withdraws to Hamdean, the family’s apartment in a Georgian country manner, where the mysteries of the past begin to collide with the truth of the present. And yet, the novel is framed as a mystery, sets up a question, at the beginning of the book, that I felt was never really answered.

Whereas Catherine was drawn to Keira emotionally, Michael wanted to meet her to discuss the old blueprints of the house, the design of which changed since Keira lived there. The story of the comings and goings of a missionary outpost in a desolate part of the Eastern Cape in the late 1890s.In The Shades a daughter is killed in a car accident and her parents and brother are left to find their own way to cope.

The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.
